GME Refuses Safe-Ride-Home Reimbursement, UWHA Assumes Control of Program

Under the contract, the GME is required to provide reimbursements for residents who are "unable to safely get home at the end of or during his/her shift due to extreme fatigue, illness or the late hour.” This program - the Safe-Ride-Home program - is intended to provide residents a safe way to get home when dangerously fatigued, such as after working a 24+ shift. Unfortunately, the GME started denying reimbursement.

University Provost Announces Closure of Dental Residency Programs then Reverses Decision

Awesome Dentistry Residents at Work!!!

The School of Dentistry has faced a massive budget shortfall for some time now. On October 30, 2017 Gerald Baldasty, PhD., Provost of the University of Washington sent a memo to the School of Dentistry informing them that he would "teach out for only the Oral Radiology Residency and the General Practice Residency programs" and "Suspend new matriculation into the resident/graduate program for Pediatric Dentistry." These actions were being taken to try to mitigate the financial difficulties that face the School, and give them time to develop a "sustainable academic business plan."

Sadly, Graduate Medical Education (GME) and Labor Relations (LR) have now decided to prioritize getting themselves home early above patient and housestaff wellbeing.

This is a vital issue that we all have a part in. The antimicrobial sterwardship team has prepared tools to help us use this resource in the appropriate way such as the Antibiotic Reference Kit in the Online Clinical Care Advisories & Messages App (OCCAM).

Post-docs on the UW campus are working to form a union and we support them!

For residents and fellows, our overwhelming vote to form a union and the new contract we negotiated has led to big improvements in salary, stipends, and labor practices. Post-docs at UW are now striving for these same benefits too.
